The UCLA baseball squad came upward short of capturing a No. 1 seed and hosting the regional round of the NCAA Tournament. Instead, the Bruins had to fly to Alabama mid-week, and wake upwards at 5:xxx a.one thousand. – 3:30 a.g. on the West Coast – on Fri to prepare for an 11 a.m. outset pitch to open the Auburn Regional against Florida State.

And the No. 2 seed Bruins again came up short, finding themselves quickly on the brink of elimination after falling, 5-iii, to No. 3 seed Florida Land at Plainsman Park in Auburn.

The Bruins (38-23) volition take on Southeastern Louisiana (thirty-30) in an elimination game on Saturday at 10 a.m. PT. The Lions were crushed, 19-7, by regional host Auburn (38-19), the No. 14 national seed, on Friday.

UCLA had chances to rally late, only the Bruins left the bases loaded in the sixth and Carson Yates lined out to short with the tying run on third and two out in the eighth afterwards they had plated a run on a wild pitch.

"There were a lot of difficult-fought innings, a lot of difficult-fought zeroes," UCLA caput motorcoach John Savage said. "They did a petty scrap more than. We had some opportunities, just they did a trivial bit more with their opportunities than we did, then unfortunately we came out on brusque end."

UCLA cut a 3-0 Florida Country lead to one run in the bottom of the fifth, simply the Seminoles (34-23) answered with a run in the 6th.

Alex Toral gave Florida State some insurance in the ninth with a long homer to correct off Bruins reliever Alonzo Tredwell to requite the Seminoles a two-run cushion.

Savage didn't arraign the outcome on the early on start time, just he did question why the first pitch was before noon. The 2d game on Friday between Auburn and Southeastern Louisiana was non scheduled to start until 7 p.grand. local time.

"I don't know why we're playing at 11," Savage said. "I get the time in between games. (12 p.m. to six p.thousand.) seems to exist a little more normal to me, over 25-30 years of (coaching) D-ane baseball. But it is what it is."

The game started equally a pitchers' duel between two of the all-time throwers in higher baseball. UCLA's Max Rajcic did not pitch in the Pac-12 Tournament due to an oblique injury, just he entered the postseason coming off two Pac-12 Bullpen of the Week awards in May. Florida Country's Parker Messick, meanwhile, was 3rd in Partitioning I in strikeouts with 140.

Both pitchers cruised in the early part of the game but weren't as sharp later.

Rajcic allowed 4 runs on v hits in six innings. Messick went five innings and allowed two runs.

"I thought both teams did a really skillful job of putting two pretty good pitchers into some tough situations," Savage said.

In the fifth, Messick allowed his get-go hit since the first inning on a solo shot to left by Yates. Two more runners reached base of operations before Jake Palmer singled in Kenny Oyama to cut the Florida State lead to 3-2.

Rajcic retired eleven consecutive Florida State batters before running into trouble in the fifth, when the Seminoles expanded their lead to iii-0 off of a ii-run triple by Jordan Feces.

"It was good to be back," Rajcic said. "Obviously the result wasn't what nosotros wanted, simply my goal is to requite the best chance for my team to win and try to compete."

Florida State struck first on a two-out RBI single in the beginning inning by James Tibbs and then threatened for more by loading the bases, but Rajcic got Logan Lacey to ground out to end the frame.

In a regional featuring three teams – Auburn, UCLA and Florida State – that were ranked in the top 10 at some point this season, the Bruins are hardly out of contention in the bracket, as long as they can relieve their season Saturday forenoon.

Savage pointed out that his team was in this position last week, when UCLA lost to Cal to open up the Pac-12 Tournament simply beat Washington the adjacent day and then won 3 more games earlier existence eliminated by Oregon State in the divisional final.

"Hey man, information technology's baseball," Barbarous said. "It'south the playoffs. You lot live for another day."
